“Liberty Street” by Heather Marshall
Published by Doubleday
I went into this book thinking it was just a mystery, not
realizing it’s actually historical fiction.
Its main focus is the deplorable conditions of a women’s prison in
Toronto during the 60s where inmates are not just mistreated, they are unknowingly
used as Guinea pigs for trial medications and treatments. It speaks to women’s rights (or lack thereof)
and mental health, specifically how post-partum depression was considered
insanity at the time. There are a lot of
issues rolled into this story. Unfortunately,
I felt like it dragged at times, although I still enjoyed it and would
recommend it.
Thank you to NetGalley and Doubleday for the complimentary
copy of this book. As always, the
opinions expressed within this honest review are completely my own.
